Into Siena - last day of hiking

If we’re in Siena (which we are), then the walk is finished. It was grouse, but hard work at times. Beautiful spring weather and gorgeous views the whole way along. Andy’s MAPS.ME maps kept us on the track and Graz and DJ kept the ‘vibe’ of the group in a constant state of euphoria with their quick wit and uplifting conversations.

For the last day the track took us through country lane ways and single tracks. A few fellow-travellers in our direction (towards Rome) and a couple of bikes in the other towards Canterbury).

About 7 km from the start we chanced upon a rest stop that was somewhat unusual. Coffee and cakes were on offer and the toilet was immaculately clean. All that was asked in return was a donation. Wonderful!

This is a photo of DJ peeking into a 15th Century tunnel created to drain a pesky lake so that agriculture could progress effectively. Amazingly well-preserved. [So is the tunnel].

The last part of our walk up to Siena was brutal. Getting to the top of the hill was a struggle indeed, with a fellow traveler (not any of us) stopping to pant every few metres. At the top of the hill we looked out for bus stops to provide relief from the walking through the ’suburbs’ to our hotel. Sadly, none appeared. We trudged wearily on and in so doing preserved our reputations for intrepid adventurers.

Toodles!
