Travel day today. Long train trip up to Munich in quite some comfort. WiFi connection, reserved seats and a full, but not overcrowded train. Hopped off at Munich (which was just as well, because the train we were in terminated there). Across the road to a very ordinary café, where we had an OK coffee. A German coffee this time.
Thence hopped on another train. Different train this one, as seats cannot be reserved. Since the train began its journey at that point we were able to grab seats that would do us for the journey. Very full, this train. Lots of peeps with no seat. Lots of standing. No internet this time, so have to make do with saved on iPhone stuff. And also catch up on the blog.
Verona was a surprisingly interesting city. Lots going on and plenty to see. When we left today a fun run was starting in the main square. 5, 10 or 20 is. We pushed past the entrants and headed to the station amid a turbulent atmosphere of anticipation of the run ahead from the runners hopeful of bettering last year’s PB.
Yesterday we walked the city, Andy having completed his 5-km run in the early morning. DJ and I headed to the ancient arena and had a jolly good look-around there. We decided it’s best observed from outside, as inside was pretty much like arenas everywhere, including our very own MCG.
We discovered a real gem behind the arena, however. A crypt across the road held a series of scenes from the nativity. This sounds a little in the Huge Yawn side, but each of them was truly wonderful. No sign of golden halos – just dioramas of realistic scenes. No religiosity at all. Astonishingly gorgeous.
Later on we caught up with G & A and toddled big to a lovely garden designed yonks ago (1600s) and visited by famous chaps such as Goethe and Rodin. And me.
After that, a scorch up a Huge Hill to overlook the town and take some more snaps.
Then an AVR (Authentic Verona Restaurant) and then bed. All ready for today’s train journey.
Toodles!
